Solar energy is a renewable energy and more importantly, it’s free.
Contrary to popular belief, solar energy generated from the sun here in Ireland is equivalent to the same amount of energy generated in the south of France and northern Spain.
Most of this solar gain will be provided in the summer months, up to 90% of your hot water requirements, but you can also expect 20% in the winter months and 50% in spring and autumn
A solar heating system installed in Ireland will provide 60 to 70% of your annual hot water requirements. Depending on your hot water requirements this could represent savings per year from €100 to €450 depending on the size and location of you home.
South facing roofs are well oriented for the installation of solar panels. The hot water requirement and solar panel sizing is generally determined by occupancy levels.
Depending on the house size, around 4–6m2 of solar panels are usually enough but you will require a larger hot water storage cylinder (between 150 and 300 litres). If you decide to invest in a new hot water cylinder ensure it is well insulated (50 mm insulation minimum) to reduce heat losses. The payback for solar panels will vary depending on size and location but the panels are very reliable and have up to a 25year life span.
